Check various forums and Blogs to see if they have shared their experiences. You must also not draw any conclusions from just one or two good reviews. Rather, you must gather significant amount of information before deciding whether to download the freeware or not.
Another very good test is to visit a reputed software downloading site, and see if the product exists there. Reputed sites would never display products that are troublesome. In case you find the product in the list, you can safely download it. However, in case the product does not exist in the list, you may drop the idea or else survey more about the product. The key is to research until you are certain about the credibility of the software.
Do not skip the terms and conditions page, but read it carefully. You might get a significant amount of clue about the authenticity of the company. You should however not completely depend on this tactic. After all, any page can easily be faked. There is no harm in reading through the page though.
